I’m back after another short break. This time with some homemade tortillas. Do you make your own tortillas? Is it too much of a bother? I haven’t made any in a really long time. For awhile I was very much into them, well more like into the tortilla chips. I love all sorts of crunchy snacks and this one is seriously addictive. Making your own tortillas and tortilla chips at home is really easy so if you ever feel like it, give it a try.
I used several of the tortillas to make a small batch of chips in case I want a snack later in the evening. It didn’t survive until evening :).
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 4 tablespoons sunflower oil
- 1/2 cup water
Directions:
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, salt and baking powder. Add the oil then start adding water and mixing with a spoon until the dough forms. Knead it for a few minutes. Cover with a towel and let it rest for 30-40 minutes.
Heat a frying pan over medium heat.
Divide the dough into 12 parts (or as many as you want to, depending on how big/small you want the tortillas).
Shape each one into a ball then flatten it and roll it into a very, very thin circle.
Cook them for about a minute or until the bottom surface has a few brown spots and you see bubbles on top. Flip and cook for another 30-40 seconds (they cook really fast so be careful and adjust the temperature as needed). You can keep the ready tortillas covered with a towel as you cook the rest.
If you want to make chips:
Preheat the oven to 180C degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Cut the tortillas (homemade/store bought, whatever you have) into 6-8 triangular pieces. Brush both sides with some oil. Arrange them on the baking sheet and sprinkle with sea salt.
Bake them for about 10-15 minutes or until crispy and slightly brown.
Enjoy!

They really are super easy to make, Lynne! And they turn out pretty well. Try them sometime. If you have some leftover, make chips 🙂
